How to check current n8n version

Check n8n version using Docker

Use the following command in the terminal and execute it

docker exec -it <container_name> n8n --version

The container name in the image isroot-n8n-1, you will run the command above as shown in the following image

Check directly in the n8n web interface

Step 1:Open your current main N8N interface

Step 2: In the left menu ->select itemHelps -> About n8n

After clicking, you will see the version displayed here

Update n8n when using Docker

Step 1:Log in to Bitvise SSH Client (SSH), select Terminal, and run the following command toBackup volume n8n

docker run --rm \
  -v n8n_data:/volume \
  -v $(pwd):/backup \
  alpine \
  tar czf /backup/n8n_backup_$(date +%F).tar.gz -C /volume .

Step 2:Edit version indocker-compose.yml

image: docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n

Step 3:Pull the latest n8n image

docker compose pull

Step 4:Restart container with new image

docker compose down
docker compose up -d

Step 5:After booting is complete, run the following command to check the expected result

docker ps
docker exec -it root-n8n-1 n8n --version

After running the command, you will see the latest version has just been updated!

Update n8n when installed via npm (Node.js)

Step 1:

Update to the latest version

npm install -g n8n

Step 2:

Restart n8n (if running in background mode)

If using PM2, restart:

pm2 restart n8n

You have successfully updated to the latest version
