The OSI model plays a core role in establishing standards for modern network systems, becoming a reference benchmark in today's network technology field. Join VPTS to explore deeper into the OSI model as well as its importance for enterprises through the following article for more details.

What is the OSI model?

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a conceptual framework created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that allows diverse communication systems to communicate using standard protocols. Simply put, OSI provides a standard for different computer systems to communicate with one another.

The OSI model can be viewed as a common language for computer networking. It is based on the concept of splitting a communication system into seven abstract layers, each stacked on top of the previous one.

Each layer of the OSI model handles a specific task and communicates with the layers above and below it. DDoS attacks target specific layers of a network connection; application-layer attacks target Layer 7, while protocol-layer attacks target Layers 3 and 4.

At the bottom of the model is the physical layer (Layer 1), representing electrical pulses transmitting data bits over cables, routers, switches, and WiFi networks that form the Internet infrastructure. At the top, at Layer 7, are the protocols and services that applications use to operate. In between are various functions and protocols that data traverses during network communications.

What is the OSI model?

The Importance of the OSI Model

Although the modern Internet no longer strictly adheres to the OSI model, instead adopting the Internet protocol suite flexibly, OSI remains an **indispensable tool** for network diagnostics and troubleshooting. Whether a user cannot connect to Wi-Fi or a website crashes under thousands of visitors, **identifying which layer of the OSI model the issue resides in helps shorten resolution time and avoid unnecessary operations.**

Not only valuable in troubleshooting, the OSI model also brings significant benefits to businesses and network engineers:

 • Helps understand complex systems:The OSI model divides network systems into 7 layers based on functionality, making it easy to organize, manage, and analyze modern network architectures.
 • Promote research and development:OSI clearly defines the role of each layer, thereby helping engineers identify tasks, design, and expand networks more easily according to unified standards.
 • Ensure flexible standardization:Instead of being locked into a specific protocol, OSI allows flexible selection of technologies within each layer while still ensuring cross-system interoperability.

Learn about the 7 OSI layers

The OSI model divides the communication process into 7 layers, each with its own function and task, interacting with one another to ensure efficient data transmission. Below, we briefly describe each layer.

How do application layer attacks occur?

The fundamental efficacy of most DDoS attacks stems from the asymmetry between the resources required to launch an attack versus the resources needed to absorb or mitigate it. While this remains true for L7 attacks, the impact on both the target server and the network requires less bandwidth to achieve the same destructive effect; an application layer attack causes more damage with less overall bandwidth.

To understand the reason, let's examine the difference in relative resource consumption between the client making the request and the server responding to the request. When a user sends a login request to an online account such as a Gmail account, the amount of data and resources the user's computer uses is very small and disproportionate to the amount of resources consumed while verifying login credentials, loading relevant user data from the database, and sending back a response containing the requested web page.

Which protocols do routers use?

Network routers use specific protocols to determine the most efficient network path to other routers. These protocols are not used to transmit user data. Key network routing protocols include:

BGP: Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is an application layer protocol used by networks to broadcast the IP addresses they control. This information allows routers to decide which networks data packets should travel through on their way to the destination.

EIGRP: Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) determines the distance between routers. EIGRP automatically updates each router's record of best paths (known as the routing table) and broadcasts those updates to other routers across the network.

OSPF: Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocol calculates the most efficient network routes based on multiple factors, including distance and bandwidth.

RIP: Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is an older routing protocol that determines the distance between routers. RIP is an application layer protocol.
