While using a VPS, configuring IP addresses correctly plays a very important role in ensuring stable, secure, and manageable connections. AtVPTS, each virtual private server (VPS) is assigned a dedicated IP address – giving users full access and control over the system just like a real physical server.
In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to add an IP for VPS in a detailed and easy-to-understand manner, suitable for both beginners and technicians. Proper IP configuration will help the VPS operate more smoothly, ready to serve needs such as: running websites, ERP systems, proxies, remote desktops, game servers, or internal applications.
Let's begin setting up the IP for your VPS at VPTS quickly and accurately!
I. What is IP?
IP (Internet Protocol)is a protocol in the TCP/IP suite – the foundation of the internet, helping identify and route devices across networks. Simply put, an IP is like a device's home address on the internet, ensuring data reaches the right destination.
There are 2 main types of IP addresses:
- IPv4– Common current format (e.g.,
192.168.1.1)
- IPv6– New, longer format designed to replace IPv4 upon address exhaustion
Example:2401:2420:0:32a0:bd96:2bdc:c791:f2d
Role of IP:
Identify devices on the network (computers, phones, servers...)
- Supports accurate data transmission from device A to device B
- Is a critical factor in configuring networks, VPS, domains, security...
II. Installing and Configuring Additional IP Addresses
1. BvSshClient tool
First, to add a local CentOS IP on a VPS, you need a VPS running the operating system CentOS 7 and above and install the application BvSshClient (1244 downloads) .
2. Configure Additional IP Addresses
Step 1:Log in to BvSshClient
Enter host: e.g., 103.77.173.42
- Enter Port: 22
- Enter user and pass>Log in to
Step 2:Open the New Terminal Console window
Step 3:Add IP to VPS
Check IP address and network interface using the command below:
Copyip a
- Command ip a: used to view IP addresses.
- eth0: is the network interface.
- inet 103.77.173.42/23 brd 103.77.173.255 scope global noprefixroute eth0: is the IP address of the VPS.
Continue entering the following command to add a new IP, for example192.168.53.1with prefix/24into the network adaptereth0.
You can completely change theeth0with the corresponding network interface name on your server if you need to add an IP to another network device.
/sbin/ip addr add 192.168.53.1/24 dev eth0
/sbin/ip addr add
dev eth0 : Command to add IP
- Enter ip a : Check if the IP has been added
- inet 192.168.53.1/24 scope global eth0: IP has been added
Note:When the server is rebooted, manually added IP addresses will not be retained.
To ensure this IP is automatically configured after each reboot, you should add the IP configuration command to the file/etc/rc.local. This helps the system automatically reassign the IP every time the VPS or server reboots.
echo “ip addr add 192.168.53.1/24 dev eth0″ >> /etc/rc.local”
To check whether the added IP address is working, you can use the commandpingas follows:
ping <địa chỉ IP>
echo “ip addr add 192.168.53.1/24 dev eth0″ >>/etc/rc.local": Command required in the file.
- Command ping 192.168.53.1: Check IP.
III. Conclusion
Adding IP addresses to a VPS is an important operation that expands connectivity, configures services, or deploys multiple applications on the same server.
